If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that Dude’s brain is about as comprehensive as the iTunes Store when it comes to knowing music. He spends so much time listening to the radio that he knows songs, bands, and individual artists that we never thought he would.
Last night he proved just how good he is.
Last night, the whole family headed over to Mom Mom and Pop Pop’s house for dinner and game night.
As usual, Dude requested that Mom Mom put on B101 as background music during dinner.
Towards the end of the meal, he was humming/singing along to the Phil Collins song that was playing on the radio.
Dude went through a serious Phil Collins phase a few years back. The Phil Collins CD (I forget which one) was ALL that Dude would listen to throughout the day.
Dad knew this and decided to test Dude’s knowledge.
“Dude, do you know who sings this?” asked Dad.
Dude mumbled his response, but I was pretty sure I heard what he said, and it definitely was not Phil Collins.
“What?” Dad asked.
“Genesis, yo.” Dude answered.
“What?” Dad asked quizzically.
“I think he said Genesis,” I offered. (For those of you not familiar, Genesis is the band that Phil Collins sang with before he decided to pursue a solo career.)
“Oh! Haha you’re close Dude, but it’s Phil Collins,” Dad clarified.
Nonetheless, we were all impressed. He recognized Phil Collins’s voice and had associated it with his original band from the 1970s. Not something you would expect a kid in his early 20’s to know.
Meanwhile, I hopped up from the table to grab a piece of paper and a pen. “I need to write this down! It’s a good story for the blog! What’s the name of this song?” I asked.
No one was quite sure, so Dad took out his iPhone, opened his Shazam app, and held it up to the radio.
Five seconds later, his eyes widened and he started laughing heartily.
The name of the song?
“Throwing It All Away.”
Everyone looked at Dude, who was still sitting at the table, happily humming along to Genesis.
“Dude just SCHOOLED you, Dad!!!!!” I exclaimed.
“Why yes. Yes he did.”
